Triclosan is an endocrine-disrupting chemical, and in 2016 the FDA banned the sale of consumer hand washes containing triclosan over concerns that it is not only unsafe (it may lead to development of allergies and bacterial resistance, cause skin irritation, and even disrupt proper hormone function), but also ineffective (in the FDA’s study, triclosan was not shown to be more effective than regular soap and water).
